Azerbaijan joins the Paris Agreement on Climate

Official signing ceremony of a new climate treaty - the Paris Agreement will open today in New York on April 22, the International Mother Earth Day. It is expected that this day will go in history for the largest number of countries that will sign the international agreement on the same day – participation of the leaders and representatives from more than 155 countries is planned. Countries signatories of the Paris Agreement undertake to prevent a rise in global temperature above 1,5-2S.

The agreement provides for the adoption of a number of difficult political and economic decision-making, as well as a challenge to mobilize at least $100 billion until 2025. Actions to protect the climate should lead to faster economic growth, the development of domestic innovative technologies, reduce dependence on energy imports and by fluctuations in the world prices for energy resources, reduction of public spending on heating and increasing the number of jobs. In particular this applies to energy efficiency and conservation in all sectors of the economy and the gradual transition to renewable energy in order to improve economic and energy security of the country.

Azerbaijan is among the countries that have expressed a willingness to sign the Paris Agreement. Accession to the contract guarantees support in achieving these goals by such institutions as the World Bank, EBRD, USAID, UNDP.

Azerbaijan at the ceremony  is represented by a delegation led by Huseyn Bagirov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources. The first to sign the document  was the  French President Francois Hollande,  under the auspices of which  was held  last year's Paris Conference on climate.

Global holiday - International Mother Earth Day was  set on the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly 22 April 2009 (resolution № A / RES / 63/278 and its collaborators made more than 50 UN member states), and is marked since 2010 annually on 22 April.

The resolution also notes that the term "Mother Earth" is generally accepted in many countries,  it reflects the relationship between the planet, its ecosystems and man. The tradition of celebrating Mother Earth Day originated in the United States on the initiative of environmental activist Haylord Nelson. On April 22, 1970 Day was celebrated for the first  time.-0-
