Baku / 23.08.17 / Turan: The lawyer of Elgiz Gahraman, the activist of the NIDA Movement, who was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison, lodged a cassation appeal with the Supreme Court. His lawyer Fariz Namazli said, the defense considers the verdict to be ungrounded and illegal, and asks to cancel decisions on the case of Gahraman of lower courts. The appeal also contains a request to stop the criminal prosecution of the activist on justifiable grounds.
* Gahraman was arrested on August 12, 2016 on charges of illicit drug trafficking on a large scale. On January 16, 2017, the Baku Serious Crimes Court sentenced him to 5.5 years imprisonment. On May 18, the Appellate Court upheld the verdict.
