CPCS demanded the release of political prisoners

Committee to Protect Civil Society Committee (CPCS) called on the Azerbaijani authorities to put an end to the repression, and unconditionally release all political prisoners.

"The Azerbaijani authorities, despite the demands of the local and international community, continue the campaign of harassment and threats against social and political activists. Dissidents are under surveillance, they are kidnapped, tortured, they are arrested for libel, and the courts subject them to  fantastic punishment," reads the CPCS statement. The most egregious violations of human rights were against the defendants in the so-called "Nardaran case."

"In view of the lack of independence of the courts very often the evidence by protection are rejected, there is no objective and fair legal assessment. As a result, people who have not committed any crime, are accused of grave crimes and sentenced to absurd terms," said in a statement.

Another  question that causes the concern of the CPCS is the serious health problems of political prisoners. "Despite this, they  are not examined, do not take serious measures for treatment.  A theologian Ruhulla Akhundzade who is currently under arrest  suffers  from blood pressure, water retention in the legs, Faik Amirli (financial director of the newspaper "Azadlig") suffers from gastro-intestinal diseases. Youth activist Ilkin Rustamzade  suffers from neurosis and ulcer. Despite the fact that their family members have repeatedly appealed to the relevant bodies, the necessary measures for the treatment of political prisoners are not taken," the document says.

According  to the CPCS, the number of political prisoners in the country is 160, and on this indicator per capita, Azerbaijan is one of the leaders in Europe.

"The Committee to Protect Civil Society calls on the Azerbaijani authorities to put an end to the repression, as well as to the unconditional release of all political prisoners",  reads the statement.

** The CPCS was established back in 2009. At that time it included about 100 independent NGOs. Currently about 20 activists are actively involved in the CPCS.  -06D--
