"Ecofront" called water reservoir in Seyudlu as threat to part of country
Baku/24.06.23/Turan: The independent public Azerbaijani organization "Ecofront" has issued a statement refuting statements of the government commission on safety of the reservoir with chemical waste near the Seyudlu village of the Kedabek region.
"Ecofront" considers the pond built for storage of toxic waste to be unable to prevent the seepage of toxic waste into the ground and subsurface waters. "The barn is not insulated even with primitive insulating materials and was poorly managed. Only the dam is isolated. The barn is capable of creating a serious environmental threat to the part of the Azerbaijani territory," the organization believes.
"Ecofront" called on the government to act rationally and responsibly, avoiding participation in political games and accusations.
The organization reports that it tried to analyze the water in the streams flowing in the storage area, but the police took the samples taken.
"Ecofront" demands that the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, as well as the management of the gold ore combine, ensure the participation of experts of this organization in monitoring the environmental situation in the Gadabey region.
On June 20, security forces in Azerbaijan used special means to disperse the rally of residents of Seyudlu village of Gadabey region, who opposed the construction of an artificial reservoir for discharge of gold mining waste at the Gadabey deposit. There are victims among the protesters, five people were arrested, another elderly woman was sentenced to a fine.
On June 21, the villagers again came out to protest, demanding to stop the construction of the reservoir and release the detainees. The authorities reported on the creation of a commission to assess the impact of waste from the gold deposit on the environment. The government commission declared that there was no harm from the work of the plant. Since the morning of June 22, the police have restricted entry to the village, allowing only people with a local residence permit to enter Seyudlu.
It must be recalled that Ecofront" is a group of public environmental activists and conservationists. The founder is Javid Gara.—06D-
