Ex-Commander of Navy of Azerbaijan Condemned Conditionally
Today the Military Court of Azerbaijan passed a verdict on the former commander of the Navy of Azerbaijan, Vice Admiral Shahin Sultanov.
The court found him guilty under Articles 313 (forgery) 179.3.2 (large-scale appropriation) and sentenced him to 8.5 years imprisonment. However, taking into account mitigating circumstances, the court appointed this punishment conditionally with a three-year probation period. Sultanov was at large during the trial.
Other defendants in this case, Ghalib Hajiyev and Kazim Askerov were also convicted conditionally. The latter was released from custody in the courtroom.
The prosecutor asked to sentence Sultanov to 13 years in prison. Sultanov, in turn, in his closing speech pointed to the falsification of the criminal case and the unfounded character of the prosecution and asked to acquit him. -06D-
