Explosion in Araz Plant Kills Two People

The Ministry of Defense Industry spread a short message that as a result of the explosion in the Araz plant, two employees, i.e. Mammad Agamir Oglu Allahyarov and Ilhama Asker Gizi Nuriyeva, lost their lives.

Earlier, the ministry and the police did not confirm reports of deaths.

In connection with the explosion in the military factory Araz in Shirvan, a criminal case was initiated under two articles of the Criminal Code. According to preliminary reports, the explosion occurred during the disposal of expired ammunition. As a result of the explosion, 24 people were injured and 10 of them are in hospitals.

As stated by the Interior Ministry, Emergencies Ministry and Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan, the explosion occurred at 15.30 at the recycling site of Araz of the Ministry of Defense Industry (MDI) of Azerbaijan.

Personnel and equipment from the appropriate state agencies arrived at the scene immediately and the necessary measures were taken to prevent the expansion of the explosion zone.

24 victims of the explosion were taken to the Central Hospital of the city of Shirvan and the Diagnostic Center. Fourteen people were allowed to go home after the due outpatient care. In-patient treatment is provided to seven people with minor injuries and three patients, whose condition is characterized as moderate.

The Investigation Department of Grave Crimes of Azerbaijan General Prosecutor's Office initiated a criminal case under article 223.2 (violation of safety rules on explosive objects, resulting in serious consequences) and 314.2 (negligence causing grave consequences) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. An investigative team was created by the staff of Prosecutor General's Office, Interior Ministry and Ministry of Emergency Situations. The necessary actions are taken and the appropriate expertise is assigned.

During the initial investigation it was found that the explosion took place in preparation for recycling obsolete ammunition of various calibers.

To investigate the causes and eliminate the consequences of the accident, President Ilham Aliyev established a state commission headed by First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov. -06D--
