Yesterday evening in Ismayilli police detained the deputy chief editor of Cumhuriyyet, reporter for the online TV program Azerbaijani Hour, Elchin Ismayilli.
According to the journalist’s brother Elshan Ismayilli, Elchin Ismayilli is accused that, being drunk, he used foul language in a public place.
The journalist told his brother about his arrest at 20:30 by SMS. A few minutes before that Elchin spoke with his brother on the phone and was not drunk.
On Wednesday, Elchin was brought to court under Article 310.1 (disobeying the lawful demands of police).
Elchin is known for his active media coverage of human rights issues in the Ismayilli region and for his criticizing local officials and law enforcement officers.
He was sued several times and exerted physical pressure.
Last week he published information about how the deputy head of Ismayilli police Shohrat Kerimov, being intoxicated, made a road accident and was seriously injured.
The publication also recalled that Kerimov gave false evidence against those arrested on the Ismayilli events of 23-24 January 2013. -03B-

On December 25, an Embraer 190 passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL), on a Baku–Grozny flight, crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan’s Consul General in Aktau, Ayxan Suleymanlı, stated that the plane had 67 people onboard, including crew members, 38 of whom died. According to him, 26 of the deceased were Azerbaijani citizens.
