Landslide Intensified on Bayil Slope
Baku/29.01.21/Turan: On the Bayil slope, a landslide intensified again. As a result of the descent of land between the villages of Badamdar and the 20th Site on the evening of January 28, one restaurant and two private houses were damaged and people were evacuated, while no injuries were reported, the Baku Executive Power said.
Elkhan Asadov, deputy head of the State Agency for Safety Control at Construction, said the reason for the activation of the landslide zone is chaotic development over the years. So, in the upper part of the territory where the landslide occurred, residential buildings and public catering facilities have been built for 40-50 years without any engineering preparatory work or sewage infrastructure.
Since there was no sewage system, the wastewater was collected underground, seeping into the ground. Several years ago, the Ministry of Emergency Situations invited specialists from Japan, and retaining walls were erected on their advice. This prevented the destruction of many houses, Asadov said.
In turn, Rafig Hasanov, a specialist of the National Geo-Prospecting Service of the Ministry of Ecology, pointed out the softness of the rocks in this area, which are easily washed out. The presence of the slope and atmospheric precipitation periodically contribute to the activation of the landslide. In the recent period, this process has intensified due to the discharge of domestic water from houses in the upper part of the slope, he noted.
Note that landslides on the Bayil slope occur periodically. They have become more frequent since the 1990s. After that, the area began to be actively built up without observing standards and with the connivance of local, city and central executive authorities. -06D-
