Lawyer: Charges Fail at Journalist Afghan Sadygov’s Trial
The Jalilabad District Court on December 1 held a meeting on the case of the journalist Afghan Sadigov.
The founder and editor of the website Azel.tv, Sadygov was arrested on November 22 and charged under Article 127.2.3 (deliberate causing of less serious harm to health in a dangerous way of hooliganism) of the Criminal Code.
We are talking about the August incident in the Executive Power (EP) of the district. Then in the reception area of the EP head a woman attacked the journalist with fists and then the police logged the incident as damage to health.
According to the lawyer Elchin Sadygov, the journalist said it was a provocation organized against him and he is being persecuted because of his professional activities.
Then the victim Alia Rzayeva gave evidence. She claimed that the journalist allegedly hit her on August 9 at about 10:00 am at the reception of the head of EP of the Jalilabad region, and she lost consciousness and woke up a few days later. According to the victim, she was immediately taken to the central district hospital, where she was treated for seven days.
However, in the hospital's registration book it is noted Rzayeva was admitted to the hospital on 9 August at 15.30. In addition, continued the lawyer, in the case file the testimony of the victim is dated August 9, and under it there is the woman's signature. "How could she sign it in an unconscious state?" the lawyer wonders.
On December 1 testimony was given by 4 of the 6 witnesses and all of them were senior officials of the executive branch.
Responding to the defense questions, the witnesses confirmed the presence of surveillance cameras in the waiting room, through which the head could monitor what was happening there.
However, in the case file there is no information about viewing the video for August 9, which would help to establish the truth.
In general, according to the lawyer, the prosecution's version is failing in the court.
The next meeting is scheduled for 10.00 on 14 December. -06B--

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
