Lifting the arrest from the bank account of "Azadlig" newspaper
The arrest of the bank account of "Azadlig" newspaper, which was imposed in October this year, has been lifted, according to the chief editor Rahim Hajiyev. He said that the fine of 65,000 manat has been paid completely. "A lengthy explanation on the matter will be given in the beginning of next week," said Hajiyev. However, he did not say exactly how it became possible to pay this amount.
The newspaper was fined on the claims of the head of Baku Metro, Tagi Akhmedov, and a businesswoman, Kabira Mamedova. The total amount of the fine was 65,000 manat.
In October this year, the bank account of the newspaper, was arrested, and all income was then spent on paying down the fines. Then the situation became aggravated, and the publication of the newspaper was suspended. Later it was resumed after a marathon fundraising effort.
"Azadlig" is a leading opposition newspaper in Azerbaijan. It was established in 1989; the first issue was published on December 24, 1989, the first editor in chief was Najaf Najafov - a prominent social activist, founder of the modern independent Azerbaijani journalism. -16D04-
