Media Review - September 12, 2018
The development of the economy over the past 15 years, the essence of mass actions, and the problems of life imprisoned are the leading topics of today's media.
The newspaper Azerbaijan writes about the development of the economy against the backdrop of the Azerbaijan Forum of Competition 2018 held in Baku. The essence of the Forum is the creation of favorable conditions for the development of business in the country, attracting investments, and progress in the agrarian sector. The application of advanced world experience, the creation of various infrastructure areas, the diversification of the economy, and the development of the non-oil sector are ensured. Over the past 15 years, USD 236 billion has been invested in the country's economy, of which USD 118 billion was foreign investments.
The website Azadliq.info writes about mass protests and their essence. The author says politicians, who oppose holding rallies, are either dilettantes or do it on demand. A rally is a demonstration of a force that the authorities must see.
The participants of rallies bring to the attention of the authorities their displeasure, and the authorities must reckon with them. The authorities must change their essence, but they do not, because they are afraid of losing power. TV and radio have lost the function of public contact, since they are in the hands of the authorities.
The Yeni Musavat newspaper writes about life imprisoned people, discussing the issue with MP Fazil Mustafa and human rights activist Mirvari Gahrmanly. The issue re-emerged on the agenda after Akif Naghy's appeal to President Ilham Aliyev in connection with life imprisoned people and torture in the Gobustan prison.
MP Fazil Mustafa does not believe that their issue should be considered by the parliament, since they bear punishment for their criminal deeds. As for changing their punishment, this is a difficult question; maybe in the law there is an opportunity to solve it.

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
