New heavy charges against Khadija Ismayilova
arrested on 5 December last year, A journalist Khadija Ismailova, who was arrested on 5 December last year, now is facing new charges, according to the lawyer Fariz Namazly. According to him, Ismailov is charged under the Article: 179.3.2 (large-scale embezzlement), 192.2.2 (illegal business), 213.1 (tax evasion) and 308.2 (abuse of power.) Accusations were put forward on the basis of a tax audit of the "Radio Liberty" on January 15, 2015. According to the lawyer, Ismayilova pleaded not guilty one these Articles, and refused to testify. For these charges she faces a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.
Ismayilov was arrested on charges of incitement to suicide on the basis of complaints of Tural Mustafayev.
On 27 January the arrest term was extended for another month and 19 days. Khadija Ismayilova denies the charges, and says that this is due to her professional activities, namely, for the investigation of corruption of Ilham Aliyev’s family.
