Police Prevent Islamic Partys Meeting in Baku
Baku / 20.09.17 / Turan: The police prevented the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA) from holding a meeting dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the creation of this political organization on September 19.
The jubilee meeting was planned to be held in the Kamal Narmin celebrations palace, IPA said. However, shortly before the event, the police blocked the entrance to the celebrations palace. Police officers forcefully pushed the party functionaries and guests away from the celebrations palace.
The police motivated their actions by the alleged presence of poisoning substances entering the restaurant's water supply network. The party considers this reason as "a far-fetched pretext". IPA believes that violent actions against the party activists are incompatible with the announcement of 2017 "The Year of Islamic Solidarity" in Azerbaijan.
Turan has not received comments from the Interior Ministry's press service yet.
The Islamic Party was established in 1991 and registered in 1992. However, it was deprived of the registration on the eve of the parliamentary elections in 1995.
In January 2011, a group of IPA activists, including its leader Movsum Samedov, was arrested. On October 7, 2011, the court found them guilty, including terrorism and an attempted violent seizure of power. Movsum Samedov was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment. Other activists of IPA also faced lengthy imprisonment sentences. -06D--
