Preparatory Session on Aziz Orujov Case
Baku / 19.09.17 / Turan: Preparatory meeting on the case of Aziz Orujov, the director of Internet TV Channel-13 was held in the Baku Grave Crimes Court chaired by Mirza Khankishiyev on Wednesday.
The court dismissed the defense"s petition to dismiss the criminal case on justifiable grounds and change the measure of restraint. At the same time, the court allowed the journalist to sit next to the lawyers.
Judicial hearings on the merits are scheduled for October 10.
The lawyer Javad Javadov, commenting on the Orujov case for the Turan news agency, called the charges unfounded.
"Orujov is charged under Article 192 (illegal entrepreneurship). This means the use of grants without registration. However, in May 2016, the Criminal Code was amended, according to which illegal entrepreneurship is considered the implementation of activities without a tax account," the lawyer said.
On the other hand, Aziz Orujov was not responsible for the implementation of grant projects. Accordingly, he cannot be charged under Article 308.2 (abuse of official powers, which entailed grave consequences) of the Criminal Code.
* Orujov was arrested on May 2 in administrative order for 30 days for disobeying the police. At the end of this period, he was charged under articles 192.2.2 (illegal entrepreneurship with the extraction of large income) and 308.2 (abuse of official powers, which entailed grave consequences) of the Criminal Code.
The journalist rejected accusations. Human rights activists recognize him as a political prisoner. -06B-
