Press Review - 04/24/15

Official newspapers present a front-page report on awarding of the International Award of Friendship and Peace to the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev by the Turkish Federation of Media Journalists. State newspapers also publish the text of Aliyev’s order to allocate 10 million manat for the construction of School N 20.

Azadlig states that the Minister of Finance Samir Sharifov instructed to oversee the financial costs of senior officials. The newspaper sees this as Sharifov’s transformation into a "powerful" figure.

Political prisoners for 10 days before the start of the European Games are going to start a hunger strike.

The newspaper says that the head of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders plans to visit Azerbaijan because of the political prisoners.

The Guardian reports the appeal to the international community "in order to force the authorities of Ilham Aliyev to respect human rights."

The US Embassy officially commented on the criticism of facts "of corruption and human rights violations in the US" by the official press of Azerbaijan. The Embassy replied that the US tolerates criticism and believes that "every foreign government has a right to monitor what is happening in America," and Washington does not view it as "interference in internal affairs." Such a response from the Embassy “led official Baku to confusion.”

The newspaper calls the removal of old cars, beggars and huts from Baku on the eve of the European Games "shameful politics" of the authorities.

Echo touches social problems in the article under the heading The Poor Need Help! It indicates that some people do not even have money to buy bread.

Novoye Vremya does not share the optimistic statements by the authorities during the crisis that "all is well". The paper wonders if there is there any reason for optimism.

Bizim Yol writes that the food trade is concentrated in the hands of 3-4 companies and the displacement of small trade outlets is inevitable.

Yeni Musavat reports that money has been stolen from the accounts of the brothers of the Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov, Logman and Nariman Mammadov, in the International Bank of Azerbaijan.

The human rights activist Arzu Abdullayeva said there will be a new pardon at the end of May. -06D--
