Professor Suleiman Aliyarli is buried (UPDATED)
Famous Azerbaijani scholar, a historian Suleiman Aliyarli, was buried on Friday in the Yasamal cemetery in Baku. The ceremony was attended by many representatives of the scientific and democratic community of Azerbaijan , leadership, students and the faculty of Baku State University, in which the professor worked.
Speaking at the funeral , the leader of the party "Musavat", Isa Gambar, gave a short speech describing Aliyarli as an outstanding personality and scientist, not only to the Azerbaijani people, but the Turkic world.
“Such people as Suleiman Aliyarli must be appreciated in life,” Gambar said. Aliyarli is one of the most prominent representatives of modern historical science of Azerbaijan. For a long time he headed the department of history of Azerbaijan.
A graduate of the Moscow State University in 1954, Aliyarli in Soviet times was subjected to pressure and harassment for being opposed to the thesis of the voluntary accession of Azerbaijan to the Russian Empire.
He also was attacked for publishing a study in 1984 on the ethno genesis of the Azerbaijani people, where emphasis was made on the common Turkic roots Azerbaijanis. Aliyarli was a researcher of ancient Turkic epic "Dede Gorgud" in medieval manuscripts in the Dresden library (second manuscript is kept in the Vatican.)
In August 2013 Aliyarli was elected an academician of the Academy of Research of the Turkic world, as well as the Honorary President and Head of the Council of Elders of the World Congress of the Turkic peoples.
Aliyarli died on the night of 17th January, on the eve of the 40th day of his wife’s death.—0-

Baku/17.01.14/Turan : On January 16, a prominent Azerbaijani scholar , doctor of historical sciences , Professor of BSU, Suleiman Aliyarli died.
A graduate of the Moscow State University in 1954, Aliyarli in Soviet times was subjected to pressure and harassment for being opposed to the thesis of the voluntary accession of Azerbaijan to the Russian Empire .

In 1989-2000 he headed the Toponymic Commission in parliament, and during 1992-2001 he was a member of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission .

Aliyarli was the author of over 150 scientific articles , 7 monographs, and 8 books .
