Aliyev Congratulates Erdogan on Results of Referendum Challenged by Opposition
Baku / 17.04.17 / Turan: Even before the announcement of the official results of the referendum in Turkey, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the adoption of amendments to the Constitution.
According to the press service of the Azerbaijani President, Aliyev assessed the results of the referendum as a great support of the policy of Erdogan by the Turkish people.
The head of Turkey thanked Aliyev for his attention and congratulations.
Both Presidents expressed their conviction that the relations of friendship and brotherhood between the two countries will continue to develop successfully in all spheres.
According to preliminary data, 51.22 percent of the Turkish voters voted for adoption of the amendments, compared to 48.78 percent that voted against.
The leading opposition People's Democratic Party and the pro-Kurdish Democratic People's Party declared massive manipulation during the elections and intend to challenge the results of the voting in many places.
Amendments to the Constitution provide for the transition of Turkey from a parliamentary to a super-presidential system.
Now the head of state will lead the executive branch, appoint the Vice-President and members of the government. The post of Prime Minister will be abolished, and the role of Parliament will be decreased.
The opposition regarded these amendments as Erdogan's desire to establish an authoritarian regime in Turkey.
The referendum split the country into two parts: supporters of strong power and strengthening of the role of Islam in the country and those who defend the principles of a secular state founded by Ataturk.
The referendum also took place against the backdrop of worsening relations between Turkey and the EU countries. -06D--
