Putin lifted the ban on flights of Russian airlines to Georgia
Baku/10.05.23/Turan: Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to lift the ban on flights of Russian airlines to Georgia from May 15, 2023.
The decision follows the recognition of Decree No. 287 of June 21, 2019, which imposed a temporary ban on Russian airlines to carry out air transportation, including commercial, to the territory of Georgia, as invalid.
The band was put in place after large-scale protests broke out in Georgia in July 2019, triggered by the presence of a Russian State Duma deputy at a parliamentary session.
The move to lift the ban has been welcomed by the chairman of Georgia's ruling party, Irakli Kobakhidze, but criticized by Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, who views it as an inappropriate step in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Georgia has become a popular destination for Russian citizens, with almost 1.5 million entering the country in 2022, according to the Georgian Interior Ministry.
