Armenia is more interested in the status than Azerbaijan, expert
The Karabakh issue has remained in the shadows because of the Ukrainian and Syrian crises, said today political scientist Sergey Markedonov, professor of the Russian Institute for Human Sciences at the meeting with journalists in Yerevan. He noted that in Russia there are no contradictions with the West on the Karabakh issue, moreover, the West is more interested in the fact that the Russian Federation has intensified its mediation in resolving the issue.
Markedonov expressed surprise at the fact that the mediation of the Russian Federation is criticized due to the fact that the issue is not solved completely. The Karabakh issue is important for Russia, but it is not the most important. Russia is not ready to drop everything and deal with the Karabakh issue, if the parties are not willing to come to a consensus," he said.
According to him, both Baku and Yerevan would like Moscow make its final choice. "But this will not happen. It is not necessary to turn Azerbaijan into a clear enemy: first of all it is unprofitable for Armenia," he said, adding that in this case, Azerbaijan is even more furious, become aggressive.
"Russia can make a choice and do it. However, it should be noted that this is due to the threats, and the effort will be focused on trying to resolve the issue peacefully," Markedonov said.
He also noted that the escalation on the border of possible, war is possible because Azerbaijan is dissatisfied with the situation. "The current status quo is rather in the interests of Armenia than Azerbaijan," he said, adding that for Moscow it is much more important that the situation be under control, and there was no tension. -02D-
