Authorities decide to punish Western diplomats who supported "Art for Democracy"
A few days ago the head of the Presidential Administration, Ramiz Mehdiyev, summoned the ambassadors of several Western countries that participated in the presentation of "Art for Democracy," and expressed his dissatisfaction. Mehdiyev quite bluntly warned ambassadors, calling their actions unacceptable, according to a reliable source.
The event was held on 11 December at the Baku Jazz Center, and was organized by the Human Rights Club. A new advocacy campaign, “Art for Democracy,” was also established. The event was held with the support of the British Embassy and the organization Civic Solidarity.
The event was attended by the ambassadors of Britain and France and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Thomas Melia. They all welcomed the idea of protection of human rights through the arts, and expressed support for the authors of their own governments. The French Ambassador, Pascal Monnier, noted the success of the previous "Sing for Democracy" campaign held through the contest "Eurovision".
Such demarche was regarded by official Baku as an open challenge. Harsh articles have appeared in the official press against Western diplomats. -02В-
