Azerbaijan Among Countries Jailing Journalists
New York / 12/14/18 / Turan: More than 250 journalists are kept in prisons around the world. This indicates that an authoritarian approach to criticism is not temporary, according to the report by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
Over the past year, most of the journalists were arrested in China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and Turkey remains the country where the number of jailed journalists is the biggest. Half of all convicted journalists are in Turkey, China and Egypt.
Two-digit numbers measure the number of arrested journalists in Vietnam and Azerbaijan, respectively, 11 and 10. At the same time, in Uzbekistan, for the first time in 20 years, there is not a single journalist in prison.
Azerbaijani authorities deny persecution of citizens for political reasons, the report said. -16D-
