Hungarian Foreign Ministry Expressed Azerbaijan Protest for Clemency of Safarov
The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Hungary Zsolt Nemeth on Sunday handed a protest note to the Ambassador of Azerbaijan in Budapest, complaining about the decision to pardon Ramil Safarov, who murdered an Armenian officer in 2004.
According to the Foreign Ministry statement posted on the website of the agency, Hungary considers the decision to pardon Safarov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, unacceptable.
In addition, Hungary accuses Azerbaijan of violating previous agreements, under which Safarov was to continue to serve the time at home, and the possibility of parole could be granted to him only after 25 years from the beginning of the detention.
The scandal involving Hungary, Armenia and Azerbaijan broke out on Friday, after Budapest gave Azerbaijan Ramil Safarov, who murdered Gurgen Margaryan in 2004. On April 13, 2006 the Court of First Instance of Budapest sentenced Safarov to life imprisonment without the right of pardon, for 30 years. In February 2007, the Appeal Court upheld the sentence unchanged. -0 -

Azerbaijan is positioning itself as a key energy partner for Europe amidst growing challenges in the natural gas market following the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. The disruption, marking the end of a decade-long transit route, is expected to heighten competition in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market and drive up prices for alternative energy sources.
