NATO chief arrives in Georgia
The North Atlantic Council and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg arrived on Wednesday in Georgia with two day visit. On the same day took place a meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission with the participation of Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili. On Tuesday Stoltenberg will hold talks with President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, Defense Minister Levan Izoria and Chairman of Parliament David Usupashvili. NATO Secretary General will also speak to students in the parliament building in Tbilisi, RIA-Novosti reported.
This is Stoltenberg's second visit as NATO Secretary General to Georgia; last time he visited the country in August 2015. The decision to hold in Georgia, the session of the North Atlantic Council was made at the Warsaw summit of the alliance. The delegation except for the secretary general, also include the ambassadors of NATO member countries.
The Georgian authorities openly declare their desire to join NATO. In April 2008, in Bucharest, at the summit of NATO member countries, it was confirmed that the Georgia in the future may become a member of NATO if it meets NATO standards. After that the Russian aggression and the occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia was carried out in August. At the NATO summit in Wales, a package of measures was approved in September 2014, contributing to Georgia’s will to membership in the alliance. -02В-
