Saakashvili: Opposition to Baku-Kars project is a crime
Presidents of Azerbaijan and Georgia, Ilham Aliyev and Mikheil Saakashvili on February 27 concluded the negotiations in private and in the enlarged format and issued statements to the press.
"In the years of independence, Azerbaijan and Georgia have reached the level of strategic allies. Today, these alliances are developed and strengthened. I am confident that in the coming years, the development of these relations will be very important for both countries," said Aliyev.
He highlighted the cooperation in the energy and transportation sectors, which enhance in both countries and have a positive influence on the processes in the region.
He expressed confidence that the new pipeline project TANAP would open up great opportunities for Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Europe.
Concerning the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, he expressed confidence that the project will be successfully completed.
Aliyev praised the reforms carried out in Georgia under Saakashvili.
In turn, Saakashvili said that regardless of who is in power in Georgia, the friendship with Azerbaijan will continue. "It is impossible to find one that is closer to Georgia than Azerbaijan. In recent years, no country has done for Georgia so much as Azerbaijan has and has not given us so much support as Azerbaijan has,” Saakashvili said, noting the personal role of Aliyev.
He further noted the importance of completing the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, calling it a "revolutionary project".
Any obstacles to the project are contrary to our national interests.
Therefore, to question the project is a crime. Opposition to the project is a betrayal of our national interests. I have no doubt that the project is our way into Europe and NATO, and it will be completed. Our partner and friend Turkey also plays an important role," Saakashvili said.
Note that the effectiveness of the BTK project has been questioned by the new Prime Minister Ivanivshili and members of his government. -06D-
