The future of Nagorno-Karabakh can be discussed after the war - I. Aliyev
Baku / 05.11.20 / Turan: The issue of the future of Nagorno-Karabakh can be discussed after the end of the hot phase of the conflict. This opinion was expressed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in an interview with the Spanish EFE agency.
When asked whether Azerbaijan agrees to grant autonomy to the region, Aliyev replied, “This should be part of future conversations about the basic principles, because the first part requires the withdrawal of the occupied territories: 5 + 2 with a schedule. There are other elements as well: security, peacekeeping operations, and the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.
We were always open to solving the problem and many times offered different options, but the Armenians rejected them. We offered autonomy within Azerbaijan, offered cultural autonomy. We said that there are good examples in the world, in Europe, in particular - the Aland Islands in Scandinavia, South Tyrol - in Italy. They rejected everything, demanding independence. They are doing everything to freeze the conflict,” Aliyev said.
According to him, to discuss the status, it is necessary to stop the hot phase of the conflict.
“Firstly, we must stop this hot phase of the conflict, return to the negotiating table, and Armenia must take on the obligations that I have already explained, and then we can talk about what will happen in the future,” Aliyev said. –06D-
