The UN Human Rights Council discussed the situation in Azerbaijan
Baku / 20.09.18 / Turan: Today the meeting of the Human Rights Council at the UN Headquarters in Geneva discussed implementation of the organization's recommendations on Azerbaijan. On behalf of the government, Deputy Foreign Minister, Khalaf Khalafov, spoke about the measures being taken in Azerbaijan to ensure human rights. In particular, he reported on the preparations for the establishment of an advisory council in Azerbaijan on the implementation of the recommendations of international organizations.
Emin Huseynov, Executive Director of the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety, reported to Turan, many of the speakers pointed out that most of the recommendations Azerbaijan had not implemented.
A special statement was made by the representative of the organization "Article 19" on behalf of a number of international NGOs. The statement stresses that the work of civil society in Azerbaijan is extremely limited, foreign donors are not allowed to work, the authorities increase pressure on lawyers and NGOs, do not release journalists and other critics of the government from prisons. Huseynov, in turn, noted that the advisory council to be established should include representatives of independent NGOs. -06B--
