U.S. Expected To Send Cluster Munitions To Ukraine
Washington D.C./07.07.23/Turan: The Biden Administration is expected to announce today a new military package for Ukraine that will include cluster munitions for the first time, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
The U.S. has long been reluctant to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions, which are banned by dozens of countries — not including the U.S. — due to their highly indiscriminate nature.
However, senior officials told reporters Thursday evening that cluster munitions, which are used on the battlefield by Russia, could also help Ukraine especially against dug-in Russian positions.
White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates confirmed on Thursday that sending cluster munitions to Ukraine was "under active consideration."
Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is expected to join the White House daily briefing today to answer questions about the matter.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, if the U.S. were to send cluster munitions to Ukraine, they would only be the explosives with low dud rates, which is "clearly a capability that would be useful in any type of offensive operations," as he put it.
