Vice Admiral Accuses Military Prosecutor’s Office of Falsification in Court
At the trial in the Military Court on the case of the former Commander of the Navy of Azerbaijan, Vice Admiral Shahin Sultanov, on March 10, he delivered his closing remarks. Sultanov asked the court to acquit him.
Sultanov was arrested in April 2014. He was charged under articles 313 (service forgery) and 179.3.2 (embezzlement on a large scale) of the Criminal Code. In December of the same year, he was transferred to house arrest.
During the trial, which continues in the building of the Nasimi district court of Baku for two years on March 10, Sultanov made his last speech.
According to a press release distributed by Sultanov's lawyers Telman Abdiyev and Emil Badalov, "the Vice Admiral, as well as throughout the whole judicial investigation, pointed out the falsification of the criminal case and the unfounded character of the prosecution and asked to justify him."
Sultanov stressed that he was always "loyal to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the state and statehood and this once again was confirmed by the results of this judicial investigation."
Sultanov also said that the commission of the Military Prosecutor's Office of the republic, supervised by Deputy Military Prosecutor Rasim Kazimov and the investigation team under the leadership of another deputy Military Prosecutor, Shafayat Imranov, "falsified the results of the inspection and investigation" in 2013.
The Vice Admiral asked the court to issue a "private ruling on the above-mentioned persons in view of the full evidence of the crime found in their actions during the investigation" and to send the matter to the Prosecutor General's Office for investigation.
The Vice Admiral also accused the investigators of misappropriating funds that were claimed from the interrogated persons on the pretext of compensating the damage inflicted on the state and asked the court to make a private ruling regarding these employees of the Military Prosecutor's Office and forward this decision to the Prosecutor General's Office for investigation.
It is expected that the verdict will be announced on March 17.
Earlier, the lawyer Abdiyev told Turan that during the trial serious contradictions and inconsistencies in the testimony of more than 200 witnesses were revealed.
According to him, experts of the Center for Forensic Expertise acknowledged that expert opinions on the appropriation and damage to the state were issued without any investigation - only on the basis of certificates of the military prosecutor's office.
As a result, the court declared null and void these conclusions, and appointed a second examination. The materials of the second examination confirm that the state has not suffered any damage.
The defense asked the court to acquit the Vice Admiral and counts on the fairness of the court, the lawyer said.
Earlier, the prosecutor asked to sentence Sultanov to 13 years in prison.
