What is behind the optimistic statements of Moscow and Tehran on the Caspian

Baku / 05.12.17 / Turan: The meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Caspian countries that ended on the eve of Moscow became an occasion for optimistic statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The development of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea has been virtually completed, Lavrov said at a press conference following the meeting.

"We managed to find solutions to all the points that caused questions," he said, adding that he expects that the document will be adopted at the summit of the heads of the countries of the "Caspian Five" next year in Astana.

In a similar way, the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Zarif also made a speech, noting the progress achieved under the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea. According to him, the parties managed to coordinate 12 documents. "Agreement was reached in many areas, however, as I said, we must agree on the content of the convention," he said. Earlier Zarif claimed that an agreement had been reached on not allowing foreign military forces in the Caspian.

In his turn, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov addressed the meeting with an unimportant statement, from which little follows. The most important thing for Azerbaijan is the issue of preserving national sectors and recognizing this from Iran and Turkmenistan. However, Tehran and Ashgabat persevere in this.

Currently, the seabed section is between Azerbaijan and Russia and Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan and Russia and Kazakhstan.

Apparently, the final text of the Convention, agreed upon by Lavrov, concerns all other issues, except the division of the sea. This means that the contradictions of interests between Baku and Tehran and Baku and Ashgabat will continue in the future. -02D-
