M.Gurbanly: There are no people who have joined illegal armed groups
Religious situation in Azerbaijan is stable, said the head of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Mubariz Gurbanli in an interview with "Voice of America". Azerbaijan is an island of stability. However, we also have crimes and identify groups associated with terrorists. Extremist groups have always sought to settle in Azerbaijan. To prevent this, special measures are taken. In recent years, the State Security Service has been conducting consistent work, rendering harmless such groups, Gurbanli said.
Answering a question about the participation of 900 Azerbaijani citizens in terrorist and radical religious organizations, Gurbanli noted that these people were in Syria and Iraq. Some of them perished, others repented, returned, and some were brought to justice and convicted.
However, among 900 people, are also members of the families of militants - wives and children, so that the number of militants are much less than this figure. Recently, were not registered the cases of the Azerbaijanis joining radical armed formations.
Preventive measures carried out by law enforcement agencies and the State Committee, the successes of military operations in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic state, repulsed the desire of citizens seeking to enter there, he said.
Answering the question about Islamic solidarity, Gurbanli noted that this year an action plan was approved with the aim of strengthening solidarity, interfaith tolerance, tolerance. These steps caused great resonance and received serious support from the Islamic world, he said.
Asked about international cooperation in combating radicalism, Gurbanli said that Azerbaijan takes these measures very seriously
Special services and state structures of Azerbaijan actively participate in international events. "In this area, we have bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran," Gurbanli said. Baku and Tehran agreed to help each other in the fight against radical religious groups.
The reasons for the appearance of such groups are being seriously studied, and counterpropaganda is being conducted. Similar measures are being carried out jointly with Turkey and with Arab countries, Gurbanli said. -03B-
