Agil Khalil: Compensation to Support Arrested Colleagues
On 29 October the European Court ruled on the complaint of a former employee of the Azadlig newspaper, who is in exile in France, Agil Khalil. According to the decision, the Azerbaijani government has to pay him compensation in the amount of 28 thousand Euros. The Azerbaijani government has assumed an obligation to pay that amount.
The lawyer Elchin Sadigov wrote on his page in Facebook that the European Court should not trust the government of Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani government has recognized violations against Khalil on Articles 2 (violation of the right to life), 3 (prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment), 5 (right to liberty and security), 6 (improper investigation of the attempted assassination, and torture), 10 (violation of freedom of expression), 13 (lack of an effective remedy) of the European Convention for Human Rights and Freedoms as well as Article 2 (freedom of movement) of the 4th Protocol.
The government has asked the ECHR to strike the case out of the list of the court and pledged to investigate the facts of violation of the rights of Khalil, and to pay him compensation in the amount of 25 thousand Euros and 3 thousand Euros for legal costs.
However, according to the lawyer, the government distorts the essence of the event and it undermines the credibility of its promises to investigate violations of Khalil’s rights. For this reason, the defense does not consider it necessary for the ECHR to trust the promises of Baku.
If the government does not take effective steps, the defense will complain to the European Court, the lawyer wrote.
Agil Khalil himself, commenting on the decision of the ECHR, first of all expressed his gratitude to those who were with him in the difficult days and later.
On his Facebook page he wrote that he would bring his struggle to the end.
"I will never accept this political regime that trampled on my rights and overturned my life. Even if they spend a million, it will not wash away the suffering they caused to me," said Khalil.
He intends to transfer part of the 28,000 Euros to the lawyers, and the rest – to journalists and the media.
We are talking about the support of the newspaper Azadlig and his imprisoned colleagues Khadija Ismailova, Seymour Hazi, Leyla and Arif Yunus, Tofig Yagublu, and the family of Rashadat Akhundov.
Khalil is ready to transfer another part of the sum to Reporters Without Borders, which provides support to journalists whose lives are in danger, which also happened to Agil Khalil before. -03B-

Although a ceasefire declaration was signed between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia, a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan has yet to be signed, even four years later.
