Arrested Journalist’s Wife Fears for His Health

Baku/06.02.21/Turan: Journalist Polad Aslanov continues his hunger strike in Baku Detention Center N1. This was reported by his wife Gyulmira Aslanova.

According to her, Polad Aslanov has not yet been taken under medical supervision or isolated from other prisoners. “Despite my appeals to various authorities, no one has yet visited Polad,” Gulmira Aslanova wrote on facebook.

According to her, Polad Aslanov weighed only 44 kilograms before the hunger strike. He suffers from cardiovascular disease, and after the start of the hunger strike, he started having pains in the kidneys and stomach, says the journalist's wife.

At the same time, as Gulmira Aslanova notes, her husband was tested for coronavirus infection.

She fears that under the pretext of being infected with COVID-19, her husband will be sent to a prison for tuberculosis patients.

Gulmira Aslanov sees this as a threat to her husband's health. Behind this, she said, there may be goals to conduct the consideration of the appeal without the participation of Polad Aslanov.

It was not possible to obtain comments from the Penitentiary Service.

* On November 16, the founder of the website xeberman.com, Polad Aslanov, was found guilty of espionage for Iran by the court and sentenced to 16 years in prison. The state prosecutor asked to sentence him to 17 years.

Aslanov was arrested on June 12, 2019 and charged under Article 274 of the Criminal Code (treason). The investigation claims that Aslanov recruited fellow journalists and persuaded them to cooperate with the Iranian special services. Aslanov denied all charges, claiming that he was being prosecuted for exposing the facts of corruption on the part of intelligence officers. International organizations condemned his arrest, calling for the release of Aslanov.

On February 1, consideration of P. Aslanov's appeal began.

During the meeting, he announced a hunger strike, demanding to ensure the objectivity of the trial. -16B06-
