A series of charity events has been announced, organized by an initiative of artists and activists in close cooperation with the Arts Council of Azerbaijan, the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Kapellhaus, supported by TISA International School and BSDR and sponsored by Second Cup, 28th May Street in support of the Baku Street Dog Rescue.
The series start with the grand opening of an exhibition on the topic I can’t speak for myself. YOU are my voice. Street Animals in Baku on Thursday, May 19th, 7p.m. in Kapellhaus.
Artists living in Azerbaijan, such as Anar Huseynzade, are expressing their thoughts on the situation of animals on the streets of Baku.
The animals’ life is sad: They struggle every day to find food in the city. Many of them are hungry beyond what we can imagine. They can be treated cruelly by humans. They can be killed by humans. They have no advocates or doctors who look after them. They have no space in town - not in summer, not in winter. Are we not all part of nature and can lend a hand and ease or mitigate the suffering of our co-inhabitants?
The relationship between humans and street animals, as well as the life of street animals in Baku shall be exposed & portrayed mainly at the exhibition. It should discourage (some) people from adding to the suffering of street animals by being cruel to them. The exhibition shall give some positive impulses to society in general.
The exhibition is followed by a truly unique, fine Jazz/World Music concert on Friday, May 20th, 7:30p.m. in Kapellhaus. Outstanding singer Narmin Karimbayova (Voice of Azerbaijan) performs together with charismatic classical violinist Alexandra Vydria and well-known Baku Jazz pianist Ilgar Aliyev. Regarding the concert and the exhibition, one can apply to Aytekin Maharramova (mobile 050 5290240).
Tickets are available only through the organizers due to limited space.
Finally, in the context of the project, the EU Delegation is conducting a children’s drawing contest with the topic “Explore your Environment”. It is open to the public on the weekend of May 21st and May 22nd. Contact person: Gulnara Bayramova, Mob.: 050-2350527.

On a brisk November evening, the residents of Baku gathered along the waterfront of the Caspian Sea, stunned by what appeared to be the washed-up body of a colossal whale. At 16 meters long, the creature’s seemingly lifeless form and pungent odor left many convinced they were witnessing an ecological tragedy. By that night, however, the mysterious visitor had departed, loaded onto a cargo platform and whisked away to the airport.
