FC Gabala Dedicates Its Success to Footballer Involved in Murder of Journalist

If FC Gabala wins Lille on aggregate in the playoffs stage of the Europa League, it will dedicate the success to the football player Javid Huseynov sentenced to 4 years in prison in connection with involvement in the journalist Rasim Aliyev’s death.

The President of FC Gabala Taleh Heydarov (son of the head of Ministry of Emergency Situations Kamaladdin Heydarov), commenting on the results of the first match with Lille, which ended in a draw 1: 1, said he was satisfied with the result.

"The draw in the guest game pleased us. Playing in a draw with such a club in France is a good indicator. It was a maximum task to achieve a good result. If we go through this round, we will devote the success to our captain Javid Huseynov," azerisport.az quoted Heydarov.

The head coach Roman Grigorchuk also devoted the draw in Lille to Huseynov.

"For us, this is a historic result dedicated to the success of our captain Javid Huseynov, who is not with us now. We believe in ourselves and we will do everything that depends on us. We understand that we can add in a week," haqqin.az quotes Grigorchuk.

Such behavior of the Gabala team executives is at least surprising. They dedicate the team’s success to a person involved in the notorious murder of a journalist. However, Huseynov was prosecuted not as an organizer of the crime, but only for his not reporting about the crime he was aware of.

Attention is drawn to another point. The death of the journalist after the brutal beating by a group of persons caused public outrage, and it was condemned by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. Then FC Gabala made a statement about the suspension of Huseynov’s part in the basic team of the club until the investigation is completed.

It turns out that in fact Huseynov was not removed, since the President and the Head Coach of FC Gabala call him "our captain", and thus the public was deceived after the investigation was completed not in favor of Huseynov.

Rasim Aliyev was beaten on 8 August 2015, and the next day he died in hospital. Defendants in the case of his death were six people, including the footballer Javid Huseynov. The Huseynov case was turned into a separate proceeding and considered in the Sabail District Court of Baku. On May 31 Sabail District Court of Baku admitted him guilty under articles 307.1 (Not informing about the known preparation or arrangement of grave or especially grave crime) and 307.2 (Not promised concealment of serious crime) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and sentenced him to four years in prison.

Five other defendants were found guilty of beating Aliyev, which caused his death, and received lengthy prison sentences.

The murder of the journalist was caused by his critical report about Huseynov. -06D-
