Gular Akhmedova Questioned as Witness
Former MP Gular Akhmedova was summoned for questioning by the prosecutor's office in connection with the corruption scandal that also implicated the former Rector of the International University Elshad Abdullayev. The Press Service of the General Prosecutor's Office confirmed this fact, saying that the questioning took place in Baku Prosecutor's Office that is investigating the video spread through the social network on September 25, where Akhmedova extorted $ 1 million from Abdullayev for his election as MP.
The case was opened under Article 178.3.2 (embezzlement on a large scale through the abuse of trust).
After the publication of this video, Gular Akhmedova refused of her parliamentary mandate, and her membership in the ruling party was suspended.
At the same time, several prominent functionaries of the ruling party New Azerbaijan condemned Akhmedova and even demanded her arrest. The first assessment came from the second person in the ruling party, the Executive Secretary Ali Akhmedov, who called Gular a fraud and demanded to bring her to justice. "The stay of such people in the party is a blot on its reputation. It is necessary as soon as possible to solve this ugly issue that strikes at the international image of Azerbaijan, as well as the parliament," said a functionary of the party and Member of Parliament Eldar Ibrahimov.
Deputy Executive Secretary of the ruling party Siyavush Novruzov also criticized Gular Akhmedova. "We have to adjust our actions and statements. Ali Akhmedov clearly expressed the views of all members of the party in respect of Gular. I think that is the opinion of the whole community," said Siyavush Novruzov. -03B04-
