HRHF: 2022 is one of the most difficult years in modern history for human rights
Baku/01.05.23/Turan: The Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) has highlighted the significance of the Russian Federation's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, as part of a broader regional human rights crisis affecting Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine.
In its 2022 annual report, the Foundation calls for international attention and appropriate action from the international community. Throughout the year, the Foundation and its network partners have been supporting human rights defenders both in and out of these countries, advocating for accountability mechanisms for serious human rights violations, and implementing projects to strengthen human rights in Eastern European countries.
The Foundation also actively worked in the Western Balkans and the South Caucasus, and cooperation and sustainability of the Human Rights House Network remained a key priority in 2022. As an organization, the Network aims to protect and promote freedom of assembly, association, and expression, as well as the right to be a human rights defender. In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Network partnered with more organizations, expanded its role, and raised awareness of encroachments on human rights.
The Foundation has been working with Ukrainian partners at the UN, the Council of Europe, the EU, the OSCE, and the Crimean Platform to draw attention to human rights violations in Russia and call for action. They have also been actively advocating against strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) used to fight human rights defenders, and seeking support from PACE members.
The Foundation and its network partners have played a central role in upholding key human rights mechanisms and standards at the international level. They have advocated for stricter EU guidelines for human rights defenders, interacted with the EU during advocacy rounds with network partners during human rights dialogues in Armenia and Georgia, and insisted on Moscow mechanisms in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in the OSCE.
At the level of the EU and the Council of Europe, HRHF worked with partners to request the opinion of the Venice Commission on amendments to the Azerbaijani Media Law.
The Human Rights House has created, supported, and connected Human Rights Houses, which are coalitions of civil society organizations working together to promote human rights at home and abroad. More than 70 NGOs joined the international Network of Human Rights Houses Foundation in 2022.-0--
