Magomedrasul Majidov Provides Azerbaijan another Olympic Medal
An Azerbaijani athlete Magomedrasul Majidov, in the quarterfinal bout in boxing, (over 91 kg.), at the Olympic Games in London, won a victory over the Russian Magomed Omarov, and secured at least a bronze medal.
Both athletes are natives of Dagestan, and in the stubborn battle victory was not easy for Majidov. The first round ended in a draw 4-4; in the second round Omarov prevailed 7-6, and in the decisive third round Majidov was physically stronger and pulled out the victory 7-3. His winning score was 17:14 and progresses to the semifinals where his opponent will be Italian Roberto Cammarelli.
Another Azerbaijani boxer Teymur Mamedov (91 kg.), reached the semi-finals and will fight his rival, Italian Clemente Russo.
However, two Azerbaijani starters in Greco-Roman style wrestling were not successful.
Among the fighters in the 60 kg, weight category Hasan Aliyev, reached the reached the semifinals but failed in the end. After losing in the semifinals, he missed a chance on getting a bronze medal taking 5th place.
In the weight category 84 kg the Iranian Saman Tahmasibi, who is on the Azerbaijani team failed in the eighth final, losing to his opponent from Georgia, Vladimir Gegeshidze.
On August 5 the winners of Greco-Roman wrestling were two Azerbaijani sportsmen Rovshan Bayramov (55 kg), who won the silver medal, and Emin Akhmedov (74 kg), who received a bronze medal.
Earlier, another Azerbaijani team member won a bronze medal, 18-year-old Bulgarian Valentin Khristov (56 kg), in weightlifting.
Unofficially, Azerbaijan is currently in 44th place in Olympics standings with one silver and two bronze medals. -0 -
