Sumgait Court Releases Journalist

Sumgait Appeal Court (SAC) today overturned the conviction of the journalist Ikram Rahimov and Rahman Novruzov convicted with him on charges of defamation.

Recall that on November 25, 2016 Sumgait City Court found Rahimov guilty under Article 147.2 (slander about alleged commitment of a grave crime) of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to one year imprisonment. The same term was exposed to Novruzov.

According to the lawyer Elchin Sadigov (Turan IA), SAC today overturned the verdict of the trial court and sentenced both to 9 months of corrective labor. Immediately the court decided that the term of 3 months and 14 days spent by the two in custody covered their penalty, and released them in the courtroom.

However, the defense will submit an appeal to the Supreme Court, seeking acquittal.

In addition, the lawyer intends to send a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights for breach of Articles 6 (right to liberty and security) and 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention.

Recall that the reason for the lawsuit was the article by Rahimov in the newspaper Hurriyet, where he accused the owner of the trade network Ujuz Market Vugar Galandarov of bribing the Chief Executive of Sumgait Zakir Farajov.

The lawyer said his client was taken to Sumgait police and under torture demanded to apologize to the Mayor of the city in front of a video camera. -16B06--
