The second gold for Azerbaijan at the Olympics
Following Togrul Askerov, another Azeri wrestler - Sharif Sharifov became an Olympic champion.
On Saturday night in the final battle Sharifov, won a landslide victory over the Puerto Rican Jaime Espinal in two rounds - 6-1 and 2-0 won the Olympic Games freestyle wrestling in the weight category 84 Kg.
On the way to victory, Sharifov defeated Ibrahim Bolukbashy from Turkey 2-0 (3:1, 5:3). In the quarterfinals defeated American Sharifov Jake Herbert 2:0 (4:1, 6:0). In the semifinals, Sharifov won the stubborn fight over Iranian Ehsan Lashgari 2:1 (1:0, 0:2, 2:1).
A native of Dagestan Sharifov since 2008 has performed in favor of Azerbaijan. In 2011, he won the world title.
Another representative of Azerbaijan on Saturday who was close to the Olympic pedestal was Aliya Garayeva. Taking 4th place in the competition for rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around, only lagging behind the bronze medalist by -0.125 points.
At the end of the Olympic Games the Azerbaijan athlete Haile Ibrahimov, of Ethiopian origin, took part in the 5,000 meters race and finished ninth with a time of 13:45.37.
August 11 at the Olympic Games saw another Azerbaijani representative, freestyle wrestler Jamaleddin Magomedov, who started the qualifying stage, but lost in the first battle against the Russian Bilal Makhov 0:2 (0:1, 0:4).
Thus, winning the awards Sharifov and Askerov increased the number of Olympic medals for Azerbaijan to nine. With two gold, two silver and five bronze medals in the unofficial team standings Azerbaijan rose to 30th place. On Sunday, the last day of the Olympics, two more Azerbaijani freestyle wrestlers will compete - Jabrail Hasanov (66 kg) and Khetag Gazyumov (96 kg). Meetings of the Amnesty Issues Commission under the President of Azerbaijan are set to resume, with expectations that a new presidential amnesty decree will be issued. The last such decree was signed on May 25 of the previous year, ahead of Independence Day (May 28). That decree covered 154 individuals, of whom 63 were released from imprisonment, while the sentences of 52 others were reduced by half.
