Thirty villages will have free internet
The Organization IREX-Azerbaijan within the framework of the project “On-line village” funded b y USAID, put into operation free Internet kiosks in 30 villages of Azerbaijan. They were placed in post offices villages, in which from 3,000 to 10,000 people live. The survey revealed that 96% of people regularly visit the post office to make
payments, or send emails. Despite the growth of Internet access in Azerbaijan, Internet services, continue to be expensive, especially in the villages. Citizens often use the Internet, visiting cafes, Internet clubs and at work.
A survey conducted by IREX-Azerbaijan in January-May 2012 showed that citizens often connect the Internet via the phones, but believe that this service is expensive, and the speed of the Internet is low.
54% of respondents said they never use the Internet, but wish that free access to the Internet be in their villages.
82% of respondents expressed a desire to take courses online.
19% of respondents expressed the desire to learn how to use email.
27% expressed an interest in social media, 50% - to computer programs. Another 2% say they are interested in on-line payment of taxes.
To meet these needs IREX-Azerbaijan and USAID began to collaborate with the Ministry of Communications. As a result, free Internet kiosks were placed in the post Offices in 30 villages. In 2013 the management of kiosks will be transferred to the Ministry of Communications.
For effective use of kiosks, training were held for the staff the post offices. In addition, post offices have been supplied with written material on the use of computers and the Internet.
Official presentation of the project “On-line village” took place on October 4 in the village of Yergyuj in Khachmas region.
As part of recent projects, Wi-Fi was installed in five villagers of Azerbaijan. In addition, IREX-Azerbaijan created in 19 regions of the Public Information Centers, and transferred to local partners.
In November IREX-Azerbaijan will hold a presentation on the project on-line education of journalism, implemented by financial support from USAID. -06D-

During search and operational activities, on January 30 at 11:20, 16.4 kg of drugs were discovered and seized in the area of the "Geytapa" border post, located on the Iran-Azerbaijan border. According to the Azerbaijan Border Service, this prevented an attempt to smuggle into Azerbaijan 11.3 kg of marijuana, 5.1 kg of opium, and 1,990 methadone M-40 pills from Iran.
