Young activists start hunger strike in the jail
Baku / 11.10.17 / Turan: Three persons recognized as human rights activists by political prisoners - Bayram Mamedov, Ilkin Rustamzade and Elgiz Gahraman, intend to start a hunger strike, stated the lawyer Asabali Mustafayev, who visited Bayram Mammadov today.
The reason for the protest is the attitude to Mamedov in jail N13.
According to the lawyer, on October 9, the representatives of official bodies visited the jail and had a conversation with Mamedov. "These people did not introduce themselves, and it is not clear which agencies they represented, but the next day Mamedov was put in a punishment cell.
Before that, he was tonsured. He was arrested for five days. Now it's cold and damp. His clothes are light. He is not allowed to hand over warm clothes. Starting today, all three of them start a hunger strike with a demand to stop pressure on Mamedov and meet with the leadership of the Ministry of Justice," Mustafayev said.
The lawyer did not say what the people who visited him talked about. However, it can be assumed that they remained unhappy with Mamedov's actions. An indirect confirmation of this is that he was accused of ill-treatment of an operative. The lawyer appealed to the ombudsman's office. They promised to visit the jail next few days. It was not possible to receive comments in the Penitentiary Service.
* On May 10, 2016, the members of the NİDA Movement Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov were arrested after writing political slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev. However, they were accused of a crime connected with drug trafficking and sentenced to 10 years in prison
Elgiz Gahraman was arrested on August 12, 2016 on charges of illicit drug trafficking on a large scale. On January 16, 2017, the Baku Serious Crimes Court sentenced him to 5.5 years in prison. On May 18, the appellate court upheld the verdict.
Ilkin Rustamzade was among the 8 activists of the youth movement NIDA ("Exclamation") convicted for long periods of false accusation of organizing riots, storing drugs and weapons. The reason for their arrest was the organization of a protest action against soldiers' deaths in the center of Baku on March 10, 2013.
The Serious Crimes Court sentenced Ilkin Rustamzade to 7 years in prison. The rest of the convicts were subsequently released.
The international human rights organization Amnesty International recognized Mammadov, Gahraman and Rustamzade as "prisoners of conscience" .- 06D--
