Answer to Open Letter by Rauf Arifoglu
Dear Rauf, I have read your letter to me and I respect you for presenting your position to me so thoroughly.
Thank you also for the kind words addressed to me. I agree with you that the situation in Azerbaijan has changed, but in the sense that it has got less democracy and less freedom and more political prisoners, including journalists.
I remember that in my residence in 2003 you wrote a very harsh article about Ilham Aliyev – it was so sharp that I asked you to soften it, i.e. to express your opinions less harshly.
And now you have accepted a medal from President Ilham Aliyev. In my opinion, Ilham Aliev has not changed - at least, he has not changed for the better.
Best regards,
Steinar Gjell

I have always put the names of agencies, institutions, and enterprises in quotation marks, but I never did so for Turan. Whenever I saw Turan in quotation marks in texts, I removed them.

The preliminary report into the late December crash of an Azerbaijani passenger jet in Kazakhstan is a masterwork in delicate diplomacy, breaking no new ground in assigning responsibility for the tragedy, yet appearing to confirm that the plane was accidentally shot down by Russian air defenses without explicitly saying so. As such, the Kazakh-produced report has avoided, at least initially, provoking the ire of either Russia or Azerbaijan.
