Natig Jafarli: After Decision to Raise Tariffs There Will Be Serious Rise in Prices
It remains an open question whether someone in the government estimated the amount of domestically produced products, on which tariffs have been increased, the economist Natig Jafarli said in his profile in Facebook.
Jafarli is sure that after the increase in tariffs there will be a serious rise in prices.
Note that according to the decision of the Azerbaijani government, tariffs have been raised on imports of certain products. Namely the import duties in Azerbaijan are determined in the amount of $ 1 per kilogram of chicken, 100 dollars per 1,000 eggs, $ 0.2 per kilogram of onions and cucumbers, 1.5 USD per kilogram of nuts, $ 0.4 per kilogram of grapes, or $ 0.3 per kilo of apples (for cider production in the period from September 16 to December 15), pears (for the production of pear cider in the period from August 31 to December), quinces and persimmons, and not less than $ 0.7 per liter of mineral and sparkling water and juices.
To date, to the aforementioned goods, the standard import duty is 15 per cent of their value.
"The decision was made allegedly to protect the domestic producer. I do not know whether or not the government has estimated how much the domestic production will satisfy demand for these products and what will be the impact of such a solution on prices," said Jafarli.
This economist stressed there are no guarantees of increasing prices by domestic producers in accordance with the products imported into the country.
"Which is logical in this difficult economic situation - to create a strong demand in the domestic market and thereby influence the price drop, or to protect the interests of 3-5 local producers? It is no secret that some large manufacturers are objects of high officials. I do not understand why consumers should be forced to choose domestic products," he said.
It should be noted the decision will enter into force for two years in 30 days after the date of publication – November 1, 2016. ------71B
