Maria Pejchinovic-Buric Elected as New Secretary General of Council of Europe
Baku / 06.26.19 / Turan: At the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg, the election of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe was held on the evening of June 26.
274 parliamentarians took part in the voting. For the former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Croatia Maria Pejchinovic-Buric 159 deputies voted. Her rival, former Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reinders scored only 105 votes.
Thus, the 56-year-old Pejchinovic-Buric was elected the new Secretary General of the CE for a period of 5 years.
The results of the vote to a certain extent can be considered sensational. For, according to many experts, Reinders was considered the favorite of the elections.
It should be noted that the elections were preceded by the full restoration of the powers of the Russian delegation.
Immediately after that, the Ukrainian delegation left the session in full. -06D--
