Azerbaijan Marks 25th Anniversary of Independence
On October 18, Azerbaijan marks the Day of State Independence. Exactly 25 years ago - on 18 October 1991, the Azerbaijani parliament adopted the Constitutional Act on the restoration of the state independence of Azerbaijan.
With this document the Republic of Azerbaijan was declared the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic of 1918-20, which collapsed as a result of the occupation of Azerbaijan by Bolshevik Russia.
According to the Constitution Act, all citizens are guaranteed full equality, regardless of nationality and religion. Until 2006, October 18 was celebrated as a festive day off. However, in 2006, Parliament amended the legislation, excluding the day of 18 October from the list of public holidays. October 18 is celebrated as National Independence Day, but this year the anniversary date is not really celebrated at the state level again. Only yesterday the President of Azerbaijan held a reception on the occasion of the anniversary of the state independence.
Representatives of the opposition explain this cool attitude to the Day of State Independence with the fact that the current authorities are not related to this event. Today, in the power are people, who at the time, as representatives of the party nomenclature, opposed the declaration of independence of Azerbaijan. -06D-
