Baku/17.02.23/Turan: BP is committed to implementing the global "Green Agenda" on decarbonization, energy transition and the creation of renewable energy sources. With that end in view, it is discussing several related projects in Azerbaijan.

Gary Jones, president for the region of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, made the statement at a briefing on February 17.

According to him, the company is close to agreement with the Azerbaijani government and "Azerenerji" on the concept of the solar power plant (SPP) project in Jabrail region (East Zangezur economic region of Azerbaijan).

"In particular, we are discussing the organization of the virtual operation of this SPP, namely, the virtual transmission of electricity that will be produced at this plant. In other words, we will produce electricity at the Jabrail plant and the same amount of electricity will be received at the Sangachal terminal to provide it with electricity. This will free up gas from the turbines currently used to power the terminal and that gas can be diverted to other uses, including exports," Jones said.

A final investment agreement is expected to be signed with the Azerbaijani government in 2023 to build the 240MW Shafag solar power plant in the Jabrail region (at a cost of around $200m) .

The main commercial issues have in fact already been resolved, the solution of technical problems is being completed, and the work on demining of the construction site of the power plant by ANAMA is underway.

The plant is expected to produce 500kWh of electricity annually.

Jones noted on Feb. 17 that the Caspian region has great potential to produce green and other forms of hydrogen.

"In general, when it comes to energy transition priorities such as the production of hydrogen - green, blue and other forms of hydrogen, the Caspian region has a very great opportunity to become a hub for this," Jones said.

He is confident that the region will become a hub for energy efficiency in the next 30 years, particularly with the participation in BP projects.-0-
