How William Hague "runs away" from uncomfortable questions
How does official London assesses the state of democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan? How can Mr.Hague comment on the opinion of human rights defenders , that West and the United Kingdom, in particular, sacrifice issues of democracy , for the sake of oil interests? These questions from Turan news agency confused the British Foreign Secretary William Hague, who arrived in Baku to attend the signing ceremony of the investment agreement for the field "Shah Deniz 2".
Hague replied as follows: " We believe that economic development strengthens human rights. Our country was the first to adopt a general strategy for economic and human rights. So there are no contradiction between these factors (energy interests and human rights - Ed.)
We believe that economic development means greater political openness. "
Asking the question from Bloomberg’s correspondent what was the reaction of the president when the Hague raised the issue on the arrest of Anar Mammadov, the British minister said that the President and the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan "expressed their views on this case and a number of other specific cases."
The British Prime Minister did not congratulate Ilham Aliyev on his reelection as president for a third term; does this mean that London recognizes that the elections were a failure? On the question from Radio BBC Azerbaijan, Hague said London supports the view of OSCE observation mission, which included not only representatives of Great Britain , but also many other countries.
After this question Hague thanked the press, saying that the briefing was over.-02В-
