USA Eases Sanctions against Tehran Because of the Earthquake

U.S. authorities have eased sanctions for six months against Iran, allowing non-governmental organizations to fund humanitarian relief and reconstruction after the earthquake on August 11, according to the press release by the U.S. Treasury.

Until October 5, 2012, American NGOs are allowed to transfer $300,000 dollars to Iran.

To transfer larger amounts a special appeal to the Finance Ministry is required. Medical and food supplies for earthquake victims do not require a special license.

The NGOs themselves insisted on the abolition of restrictions due to the earthquake. In addition, an open letter with such requirements went to the U.S. President, Finance and Secretary of State, published on the National Iranian-American Council website.

According to official information, the earthquake in Azeri-populated northwestern Iran on August 11 resulted in the death of 300 people and injuring over 3000. According to Iranian authorities, damage exceeds $ 650 million. More than 60 villages were destroyed, and up to 200 villages were severely damaged. People, who lost their homes, moved into tents. -02D-
