Russia is behind demarche of Ashgabat

The diplomatic demarche of the government of Turkmenistan and the statement on the intention to develop a controversial field in the Caspian Sea is a result of the unwillingness of the Kremlin' to part with gas monopoly in Europe, said Arastun Orujlu, a political scientist, the head of the Center for Political Studies East-West, in an interview with “Objective TV” (obyektiv.tv).

According to him, the catalyst of the provocation became the visit of the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the South Caucasus, and her unconditional support for joint projects with the countries of the region.

Prior to her arrival, Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov attended Baku, and directly addressed to the leadership of Azerbaijan, demanding, "think again" and not to start to the gas project "Nabucco", which ensures energy security of Western Europe.

The visits of such high rank officials are prepared for a long time, and they should have a positive outcome. Therefore, the statement by Ashgabat on its willingness to develop the disputed Caspian field “Kapaz” ("Sardar" in the interpretation of the Turkmen) is the evidence of leakage of information about principal agreement with the Azerbaijani government for solving a number of Clinton's strategic objectives, bypassing Moscow.

While the “hand of Moscow” remains on the "political pulse" of some Caucasian and Central Asian countries, especially Iran,  and while it has a real opportunity to influence the internal processes in these states, there will be such demarches periodically.

It is a common practice in diplomacy, therefore serious military and other consequences of these "steps" are not expected, said Orujlu. --17D—
