Tusk arrives to clarify the position of Azerbaijan on the European integration, expert
The visit of Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council in Baku is taking place at the time when Azerbaijan is to make a difficult choice. The purpose of the visit - to find out further actions of Azerbaijan in relation to the EU, expressed his opinion Arastun Orujlu , the head of the Center Studies "East-West" in an interview with Turan.
Pro-Russian forces in power in recent years managed to spoil Baku’s relations with the West. On the other hand, it turns out that Russia, makes Azerbaijan excessive demands, said Orujlu.
As a result, Baku is in a difficult situation, and can face isolation. However, there are some signs of rejection of further confrontation with the West, primarily the United States, what is evident in the termination of the anti-American propaganda in official media, the visit of a representative of the State Department of Energy, the Defense Ministry’s statement on the restoration of relations with the Pentagon.
Under such a situation the EU wants to feel the position of Baku and find out his intentions. It is known that Baku has refused the association agreement with the EU, and Ilham Aliyev ignored the Riga summit "Eastern Partnership".
At the same time, Russia's aggressive actions lately suggest that Moscow was unable to obtain the consent of Baku to conduct a coordinated energy policy, said Orujlu. Removing sanctions against Iran and the prospects of oil and gas supplies from this country to Europe, encourage Russia to act more firmly in the South Caucasus. However, Azerbaijan will be able to protect itself from it only through the support of the West, who would not sacrifice the issue of human rights in Azerbaijan in the name of geopolitics.
Therefore, Orujlu expect softening of politics and rhetoric of Baku, and in the futureThe release of political prisoners.—06B--
